Roman Tinned Bronze Mirror w/ Handle
Roman Tinned Bronze Mirror w/ Handle
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pretty tinned bronze mirror with a cast bronze handle. The mirror has one highly polished face and a back with a series of incised concentric circles decorating it. The handle has a vaguely cross-shaped form that also resembles an abstract eagle with its wings outstretched. Mirrors are often associated with women, and specifically women's religion, in the Roman Empire: devotees of Isis carried mirrors for rituals, for example. This style of mirror is similar to ones found in the Vesuvius area, probably made in Campania. Size: 3.1" W x 5.2" H (7.9 cm x 13.2 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection

#133385
Condition
Handle has been reattached, but it looks like an ancient repair. Patinas on both the bronze and tinned surfaces attest to the age of the piece.
