Item Details
Description
Group pf 14 photos taken by Harrison Forman in Tibet in the 1930s, all but two depicting a Tibetan funeral (known as a "Sky Burial") in which the body of the deceased (in this case appears to be a child) is laid out to be eaten by vultures; once the flesh has been picked clean, the bones are then broken and pulverized and then the vultures return to consume the rest. Most approx. 3" and 5" . Most with either captions and/or Harrison Forman stamps to verso. Forman went to China in the early 1930's, where he sold American aircraft and trained pilots, but he was lured by tales of a mountain in Tibet that was higher than Everest. He set off with two companions to find the mountain, but the companions were killed by Chinese bandits en rout. He wrote that short supplies, bad weather and hostile natives had kept him from the mountain, but not from touring Tibet. Harrison Forman was one of the earliest foreigners allowed into Tibet, and he chronicled his trip with photos and film. In 1935 he would publish THROUGH FORBIDDEN TIBET, and many of his photos would appear there. As-is. *********************************** From the collection of Harrison Forman. Harrison Forman (1904-1978), known as a modern “Marco Polo,” was a photographer, reporter, and author of several books. Most notably, Forman provided some of the earliest photographic images of Tibet. He also interviewed Mao Zedong and covered China during World War II. While best known for his work in Asia, Forman travelled extensively and provided numerous photos and reports from locations around the globe. His reports and photos appeared in The New York Times, National Geographic, and other publications. He authored several books and also collaborated with Frank Capra on the 1937 film, “Lost Horizon” (Forman’s copy of the script to be offered in this sale.) Provenance: Acquired from the family of Harrison Forman.
