Publisher's black cloth, lettered in silver; in the original black dust jacket, lettered in light blue and white. An excellent copy, with a hint of wear to the spine ends, faint offsetting to the endpapers, otherwise bright and clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some wear and minor rubbing to the extremities, light nicking to the spine ends, creasing to the top edges of the panels, some light soiling to the otherwise fresh panels, bright and unfaded spine. Overall, a near fine and attractive copy. Promises: Poems 1954-1956 is a collection of the author's previously unpublished poetry. In addition to winning the National Book Award for Poetry, Promises earned Warren the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry - his second Pulitzer Prize following his 1947 award for his novel All the King's Men. Promises is divided into two sections: a shorter section entitled "To a Little Girl, One Year Old, in a Ruined Fortress," which is dedicated to the author's daughter Rosanna Warren, and the second, larger section entitled "Promises," which is dedicated to his son Gabriel. Indeed, Warren's family played a key role in the freshness and vibrancy of the lyric poetry in Promises, marking a new phase in Warren's poetry career.
