Description
Raise High the Roof Beams, Carpenters and Seymour- an Introduction Salinger, J.D. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1959 First edition First edition, usual third issue with dedication leaf (there were presumably only 30 copies of the first issue). Publisher's blue-gray cloth, lettered in gilt; in the original mustard yellow and white dust jacket, lettered in black. Near fine, with just a touch of sunning to the extremities, else fine; unclipped dust jacket, with some rubbing to the spine ends, light sunning to the spine, a hint of soiling to the otherwise fresh panels. A very sturdy and clean copy. This volume contains two of Salinger's novellas that feature Seymour Glass, the eldest child of Salinger's fictional Glass family that appears in many of his writings. Like many of the Glass family stories, both Raise High the Roof Beam and Seymour are narrated by Buddy Glass, the second oldest Glass child. In the first novella, Buddy, a member of the American armed services during WWII, is on leave to visit his family in the United States for the occasion of his brother Seymour's wedding; the title Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters is a reference to a Sappho verse, in which she depicts Ares as a bridegroom. Seymour: an Introduction takes place six years later, after Seymour has committed suicide. In this novella, Buddy reminisces on his brother's life and the events leading up to his death, including those that transpired in Raise High the Roof Beam, in a stream-of-consciousness narrative.
