Gandharan Gray Schist Panel with Buddha & Yasodhara

Item Details

Description

Near East, Pakistan, Gandharan, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Carved grey schist panel depicting an early scene from the life of Buddha. Buddha sits with hand resting on his right knee, other hand raised expressively, halo behind his head. Yasodhara appears to be kneeling her right hand gesturing to her husband, holding a torch in her left hand. To each side are small attendants each with wavy locks of hair. Size: 5.75" W x 12.125" H (14.6 cm x 30.8 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.

According to legend, Buddha was married to Yasodhara and left her when setting about to achieve Enlightenment.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-private Boris Mussienko collection, Maryland, USA, acquired in the 1980s
