Description
Gandhara, modern day Central Asia, ca. 1st century BCE. This is a small grey schist head of Buddha. Buddhism came to the Gandharan world -- a combination of steppe and Hellenistic cultures -- around the 1st century BCE and Buddhist art quickly became a major part of Gandharan production. Researchers have proposed a quarry near Sakhakot, in northern Pakistan, as one of the major sources of sculptural schist in the Gandharan world. This piece comes with a brown marble stand. Size: 1.25" W x 1.6" H (3.2 cm x 4.1 cm).
