Description
**First Time At Auction**
Central Asia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Northern India, Gandhara, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A stucco head of a Buddha, a fragment from a larger statue. The eyes are small and close set together, above a delicate nose and full lips. The hairline frames the face with an indented pattern to resemble curled hair pulled up in a bun-shaped ushnisha. Remains of some pink and ochre-yellow pigments are present on the surface. Stucco can be molded into sculptural forms before it hardens to a dense and nearly rock-solid material. This head may have been molded over wood or some organic material frame hence the hollow interior which is stabilized with modern plaster. Size: 4.75" L x 3" W (12.1 cm x 7.6 cm)
Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, inherited via grandfather, who collected before 1980
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
