Item Details
Description
Greece, ca. 6th century BCE. Rare faience perfume vessel almost certainly manufactured on the Greek Isle of Rhodes around the height of the Greek empire. Using faience, a technique borrowed from the Egyptians of fusing glass with terracotta and in a color palette that clearly shows the close connection between these two powers. Molded in the typical Greek aryballoi form with rounded body, thick handle and slightly concave rim, body enhanced with series of raised nodes, thin near black band around rim. A vessel such as this would have been owned by only the wealthiest Greek family, perhaps a merchant with close ties to Egypt. Size: 2" W x 2.25" H (5.1 cm x 5.7 cm)
