Description
This is an old carved wooden mask from the Bete or Gere peoples, Cote D'Ivoire, West Africa. A wonderful mask with exaggerated facial features including globular eyes, a pronounced nose, and a full mouth and lips with retractable / movable jaw, all beneath a high-domed forehead - further adorned with brass tacks, mineral pigments and rattan. Masks like this example were worn by dancers during funeral ceremonies and as a type of 'detective' mask, used to single out a guilty party. The mask measures 16 x 9 inches. This mask will hang on the wall, or we can include a metal display stand for an additional $34.00
