This is a vintage hand carved wooden mask from the Idoma peoples, Nigeria, Africa. Masks of this type are worn during the Okoroshi festivals.Okoroshi is a six week ceremonial season during which water spirits (Masked dancers in trance) bless the growing crops during the height of the rainy season, then usher in the eating of New Yam. Such white-faced masks generally embody benign female characters who dance elegantly in open arenas for large crowds. They are danced opposite to dark masked male characters, often with ugly faces.Measures 15 x 10 inches.This mask will hang nicely on the wall, or we can include a display stand for an additional $34.00
