Artist Biography: Beulah Brown a.k.a. Beulah Elizabeth Hazelrigg Brown, (American, 1892 – 1987), is a painter, designer, and teacher who was part of the “Group of Twelveâ€. The “Group of Twelve†included contemporary, female artists from Indiana. The Group was known for their ability to create works, which blended physical, intellectual, and emotional intensity and included artists Betsy Stirratt, Charlene Marsh, Karen Thompson and Bonnie Sklarski. Brown studied at the John Herron Art Institute and was taught by William Forsyth. At this time, she met and married fellow artist Francis Focer Brown. The couple taught art in New Richmond and Mitchell, Indiana. Beulah had an interest in fabric design and patterns, creating bold, abstract designs which pre-dated the Pattern and Decoration (P&D) movement of the 1970s. In addition to the stylized compositions, she also painted tightly rendered, precise floral compositions relying on her garden for inspiration, and in December 1949 Brown added snowscapes to her repertoire. Biography paraphrased from: Judith Vale Newton and Carol Ann Weiss, Skirting the Issue: Stories of Indiana's Historical Women Artists, 2004. Condition: All pieces free of rips, tears and repairs.
