Description
F. Louis Mora Figurative Nude Drawings: Francis Louis Mora (Uruguayan, American, 1874 - 1940), charcoal and graphite drawings on paper, two openings in the mat reveal a pair of nude figure studies, signed on the face by the artist. Dimensions are: sight size of each opening - 7 1/2" high x 4 1/4" wide, overall - 13" high x 15" wide X 3/4" deep. All measurements are approximate. Artist Biography: Francis Louis Mora (Uruguayan, American, 1874-1940) is an artist known for depicting realistic scenes of early 20th century life. He worked in watercolor, tempera and oil paint. His father was Catalonian sculptor, Domingo Mora and his mother a cultured French woman, Laura Gaillard Mora. While he was born in Uruguay, the Mora family relocated and Mora spent most of his life in New Jersey. Mora was a member of the National Academy of Design (possibly the society's first Hispanic member). He won numerous awards including : New York artistic community, including the Rothschild Prize, the Carnegie Prize, the Shaw Purchase Prize at the Salmagundi Club; and in 1915 he won a gold medal at the Panama Pacific International Exhibition in San Francisco. He was also a professor at William Merritt Chase's, Chase School of Art (renamed the New York School of Art in 1898, later to become Parsons) and the Art Students League where Georgia O'Keefe was counted among his students. Mora had a successful career as an illustrator, producing work for several books and publications, including Harper's Weekly, Scribner's, The Century, Collier's, Sunday Magazine, and Ladies' Home Journal. Additionally, during World War I, Mora was one of several illustrators who volunteered to create World War I posters for the Third and Fourth Liberty Loan Boards, U.S. Committee on Public Information. Mora's work is in multiple public collections including: the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C. (Accession nos. 1962.8.27 and 1965.18.79), Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York (Accession nos. 65.237, 41.58, 67.24), and Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, California (Accession no. 1977.1.265). Condition: Free of tears and restoration. Some discoloration along edges due to matting. Overall age toning. Provenance: From a second generation collection of fine and decorative art. The eclectic and vast collection has a primary focus on mid-20th century artists working in America. Many of the selections from this collection were purchased directly from the artists and/or their representative galleries and have never been offered publicly.
