Description

This is an old hand carved wooden mask from the Bwa (or Bobo) peoples, Burkina Faso, West Africa. Masks of this type from the Bwa peoples are uncommon, as Birds are believed to be messengers, communicating from the Bwa people to the supernatural world. There is not much know about the bird masks because they are not common animals to be represented, but literature has suggested they represent the power of a chief. Measures 27 x 6.5 inches.The mask was decorated with many precise linear designs as well as avian images.
