Description
A wonderful, large Bronze Age pottery churn, c. 2200 - 1500 BC, the long oval body with one flat end with circular ledge and one rounded end with small knob and a loop handle, a near vertical neck rising from the middle of the body with angled rim. The vessel is decorated with red banding imitating rope over a beige ground. A most interesting vessel similar in appearance to the Chalcolithic examples found all over the Holy Land and thought to be used in the dairy industry. L: 20 in (52.6 cm), H: 13 in (34.2 cm). Mineral deposits throughout and a very rare and interesting vessel! Custom stand. Cf. Ruth Amiran, Ancient Pottery of the Holy Land, (Jerusalem, 1969), p. 33 for a discussion of Chalcolithic examples. Ex Maine private estate.
