Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 400 to 800 CE. A haunting copper mask, hammered into form, with raised, almond-shaped eyes, a rounded nose, and a small mouth. Two flat ears project from the sides of the mask. Tiny perforations drilled around the edges show where the mask was sewn onto a mummy bundle. Elite members of Moche society were buried with copper masks, while gold and silver were reserved for royalty. Size: 9.05" W x 7" H (23 cm x 17.8 cm); 8.45" H (21.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
A few small losses and tears along the edges of the mask, most notably at the ears. Nice preservation of form. With a mottled green patina.
