Two views of the Russian Siberian town of Beresow (today Beryozovo)—"from the south side" and "between the Menshikov Church and the cathedral"—on a single page from Prevost d'Exiles' influential collection of travel narratives, Histoire Generale des Voyages. The town by the Severnaya Sosva River was a place of exile for out-of-favor courtiers and dissidents from the early 18th century to the end of the Romanov dynasty in the early 20th century. Beryozovo was also the stop on French astronomer Joseph-Nicolas Delisle's Siberian expedition where he hoped to witness the transit of Mercury in 1740, but was foiled by cloudy weather.; G2913; van der Schley/Prévost d'Exile; Paris/The Hague / 1755; 6" x 4 1/2"; b&w; overall age toning; some spotting in wide margins; margins extended to accommodate volume dimensions
