Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco style, Lagunillas Type C, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. An abstract female bi-chrome figure, distinguished by her mask-like face, diagonal striations across one shoulder, slender arms pressed close to her torso in contrast to her voluminous outspread legs, a loincloth suspended from a thin waistband, armbands and necklace, her whitened face with red fine-line tattoos on her cheeks, slit eyes and mouth, and protruding nose adorned with a ring. Size: 5.125" W x 7.625" H (13 cm x 19.4 cm); bowl 5.75" W x 3.125" H (14.6 cm x 7.9 cm)
Along with this piece is a lovely white-slipped bowl, also created by the Nayarit, of a rounded form with a short neck.
Lagunillas figures represent a regional tradition that endured for a short period in the southern part of Nayarit. Type C figures are idealized females signifying the fertility of certain lineages. This figure shows a creative use of cream and red slip to create contrasting designs.
