He was a great French Romantic painter, growing up in the ashes of the French Revolution, and flourished through the Neoclassical styles of the Napoleon Bonaparte period. All the works in this auction were handed down through the descendants of Lancrenon, and ended up in the Estate of John Miller, NYC, United Nations Diplomat. This is an extraordinary opportunity to acquire paintings and drawings that would normally be in the collection of a French Museum. The following lots in this auction were all handed down through the Lancrenon family, and have never been available for sale since the day they were painted in the early 19th century, 200 years ago.The lots in this auction that are all from this collection are: lots 12,20,22,24,51,55,61,62,65 and 105.------------ In this painting the Greek Myth of Boreas (the North Wind)abducting Orinthyia to wrap her up in a cloud and rape her, is played out in full French Romanticism. Many artists painted this myth, including Peter Paul Rubens.------(From Wiki):"Joseph Ferdinand Lancrenon was born in Lods (Doubs) on March 16,1794 and died in the same city on August 4, 1874. He directed the Museum of Fine Arts and Archeology of Besançon from 1834 and the school of painting and sculpture of the city in 1840 and participates in major royal sets, including those of the State Council at the Louvre Palace in Paris.".---------------------------------------------------------------------- The family connection in the Lancrenon family to the John Miller Estate in NYC is as follows:Joseph-Ferdinand Lancrenon gave birth to three children, one was Marie Josephe Mangenot.Marie’s direct descendants were Cardine Suzanne and Leon Mathet.
