Description
Maurice Legendre (French, b. 1928), Parisian street scene, oil on canvas, ca. 1950s CE. Signed on lower right corner. French impressionist and sculptor Maurice Legendre is best known for his lively scenes of London and Paris landmarks. Here we see a vibrant depiction of Monmartre, featuring outdoor seating for the Au Cadet de Cascogne restaurant among other eateries. Monmartre also became a favorite locale for the avant-garde at the close of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Notice the artist at his easel who Legendre positioned quite close to the picture plane in this composition. I wonder who he was intended to portray? Could it be Degas, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, van Gogh, Monet, Modigliani, or Mondrian? All of these illustrious artists had studios around Monmartre! Size: 24" W x 18" H (61 cm x 45.7 cm)
Legendre also depicted scenes of the French Riviera and North Africa. Legendre was a student of Robert Couturier and Marcel Grimond. He won the prestigious Blumenthal prize in 1954 and the Brantome prize for sculpture in 1965.
