Description
**Originally Listed At $200**
Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam),"The Night Watch" (The Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq), painting 1642, possibly etched by Charles-Albert Waltner (French, Paris 1846-1925) on wove paper, ca. 1905 CE. A fine etching of Rembrandt's famous group portrait depicting this civic company's members preparing for a parade. Rembrandt was known for his remarkable portraiture and this painting demonstrates his ability to capture the complexity of a group portrait. An etching of one of the Rembrandt's civic-guard group portraits, one of many that the Dutch artist created during this period (reflecting Protestant tastes), but certainly the most famous one! Size: image measures 15.5" W x 12.75" H (39.4 cm x 32.4 cm)
Although most commonly called "The Night Watch" this title is actually a misnomer as Rembrandt's scene did not actually take place at night. Perhaps it is Rembrandt's talent for capturing dramatic light and shadow that led to this interpretation. Or another explanation could be that the artist used a varnish which darkened over time, making the group portrait darker over time.
