**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Near East, Holy Land, ca. 3rd to 5th century CE. A wonderful gathering of four mold-made terracotta oil lamps from the ancient Holy Land. First is a light-orange lamp with a slight concave base, an ornately-adorned tondo, and a missing handle. Second is a chalky-white lamp with a circular base, a tab-shaped handle, and a short wick spout; part of the central design is damaged. Third is a slipper-form lamp with a circular and spiralized base, a conical handle, and a "V-shaped" design in the neck channel. Last is a large umber lamp with a flat base, recessed tondo, and a pierced handle. A wonderful ensemble for any discerning collector! Size of largest (umber): 4.75" L (12.1 cm).
Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980

Condition
White lamp has area of loss to tondo. Smallest lamp has missing handle. All items have age-commensurate surface wear, light char marks to wick spouts, fading to exterior designs, small chips and nicks to bases, handles, and wick spouts, with earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
