Item Details
Description
Mixed media on paper. Featuring portrait of wavy brown hair. Signed and attr. Moise Kisling (French-Polish, 1891-1953). Two gallery labels, verso. 14 x 11 in. (35.5 x 28 cm). Moise Kisling was a Polish-born French painter best known for his highly stylized, beautiful and yet unsettling portraits. Born on January 22, 1891 in Krakow, Austria-Hungary, he moved to Paris in 1910 where he established himself as an artist. He rented a studio in the district of Montmarte and gained contact with contemporary Parisian ex-pat painters, notably including Jules Pascin and Amedeo Modigliani. His oeuvre includes landscapes, nudes, and portraiture, all painted in his unique style: blocky, bold, simplistic environments containing stylistically exaggerated figures with wide-set limbs and eyes. Kisling died on April 29, 1953 in Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France and a substantial portion of his works are housed in the Musée du Petit Palais in Geneva, Switzerland. PROVENANCE: Ludein Lefebvre-Foinet (19, rue Vavin et 2, rue Brea, Paris. Art Gallery of Toronto (Toronto, Canada). Acquired from above by current owner (Toronto, ON).
