Item Details
Description
Roman Empire / Byzantine, ca. 2nd to 6th century CE. A high-quality cast bronze applique in the form of a horse head fitted with a bridle. The details are wonderful; note his neatly manicured mane with striated marks delineating his locks, those beautifully outlined eyes, and the flared nostrils of his nose. Three perforations at the peripheries made it possible to attach. Horses signified power and military prowess. In addition, they were symbolic of the god Neptune as well as the Roman legions. A wonderful ancient bronze work with rich green and russet patina. Size: 2.875" H (7.3 cm); 4.875" H (12.4 cm) on included custom stand.
