Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A cast-bronze latch with a slender body, hinge loop, rectangular terminal, and a perforated lock panel. One end displays a stylized female figure with minimalist bar-shaped arms, a flat torso, and an expressive visage comprised of almond-shaped eyes, a petite nose and mouth, and an incised coiffure draped down the back of her head. The latch is covered in lovely dark areas of brown and green patina. Size: 5.125" L (13 cm).

Provenance: private Houston, Texas, USA collection; ex-Bonhams London Antiquities Auction, 8 May, 2013, part of lot 275; ex-Adda Family collection, acquired by Ferdinand Adda in Egypt in the 1930s; bequeathed to his daughter, G. Adda Cohen and acquired by Mrs. P. Scharrelmann, Germany

Condition
Old loss to hinge loop. Surface wear commensurate with age and use, slight bending to overall form, fading to some details of female face, otherwise very good. Light earthen deposits as well as great green and brown patina throughout.
