Item Details
Description
CURTIS, Samuel (1779-1860). Carnations (Proof). Aquatint with partial hand-color and partial print color. From "The Beauties of Flora". London, 1806-1820. 18 3/4 x 15 inches sheet, 31 x 26 inches framed
It is this group of plants that Samuel
Curtis turned his attentions to
in his The Beauties of Flora. This
exceptionally rare book with only
ten plates is perhaps one of the
more little known of English flower
books but is amongst the most
splendid. The illustrations were
mostly painting by the talented
Clara Maria Pope who managed
to convey a sense of drama in her
skillfully arranged compositions.
Samuel Curtis was a well-respected
nurseryman and head of the famous
Walworth Nursery in south London.
He made several publishing
ventures but The Beauties of Flora is
undoubtedly his finest work with
illustrations that rival those of Dr.
Robert Thornton’s Temple of Flora
and George Brookshaw’s Pomona
Britannica.
