(1865) Abraham Lincoln Assasination Postal Cover with Handwritten Quote: “A Great Man Has Fallen”
(1865) Abraham Lincoln Assasination Memorial / Political Postal Cover, with “The Union Forever” and “A Great Man Has Fallen” added Sentiments, Postally Used with Stamp, Very Fine.
Historical and Rare, Abraham Lincoln Assassination Period, Postally Used Patriotic and Memorial Envelope measuring about 5" x 3.5" in size, with added Sentiments on either side. This previously plain light orange color wove paper envelope has a thin Hand-Drawn Black ink outer border design to its face side and much heavier on the reverse. It was most probably written within just days after the assassination of President Lincoln. There is currently no letter inside, but it also most likely contained an emotional letter describing feelings about the assassination to a friend or relative, addressed to Michigan. Two superb added Sentiments are penned reading: "A Great Man Has Fallen" written across the back central area of the envelope, while "The Union Forever" is written on the front left edge, plus the address of the recipient. The folds of the envelope back are highlighted in dark black ink which enhances its ”Memorial” theme. No holes, tears, folds, or stains, and just the right side of the envelope has been sliced open to remove the original content letter. A rarity.
