Item Details
Description
10 3/4" Northwest Coast Effigy Club. Known as "Slavekiller Axes", this Monolithic Axe form is one of the finer and most documented examples known. Very well made with Monolithic style knob on handle and seal head on tip. Hardstone with good polish. Recovered in 1833 in the coastal area of Oregon. It was donated to the Watson Museum and remained in storage there for decades. Deaccesioned in 1982 (Paul Kline), it became an iconic artifact in the Dale and Betty Roberts Collection. Pictured in 1983 #3 Central States Archaeological Journal (p150), 2002 #1 Prehistoric American (p45) and in Tennessee's Aboriginal Art - The Monolithic Axe (Brehem, p73). This fine artifact is displayed over the shoulder of Dale Roberts in WW#7 (p155).
