Item Details
Description
Hispaniola, Greater Antilles Islands, Taino/ Arawak Indians, ca. 1000-1500 CE. This striking example features a stylized anthropomorphic face that depicts a skull-like human face with circular sunken orbits. Carved from a dense, hard stone in the form of a skull with large eye sockets, big nose and a broad jaw. The protruding ear-like sections are deeply carved and geometric in form. The most dramatic element is the wide grimacing mouth and deeply carved nose, which dominates the face, whether viewed from above or in profile. A fantastic example! 4-3/4" in length.
