Description
Pre-Columbian, Caribbean, Hispaniola, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A stone pendant carved to resemble a Zemi, a term referring to a deity, ancestor, or earth spirit believed to be inhabited by powerful spirits. This pendant has a wide-eyed, almost cadaverous visage, with its arms and feet in front of its body. Owners of zemi figures have traditionally honored them with offerings of food or precious gifts. Each Zemi had its own identity and name, personality, distinct characteristics, and powers. Custom stand. Perforation through neck for suspension. Size: 1.2" W x 2.9" H (3 cm x 7.4 cm); height on stand: 3.5" (8.9 cm)
