Description
Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. late 4th to 2nd century CE. A pretty ceramic votive statue of a woman, depicted draped in a himation and standing on a short pedestal. Her face gazes forward at the viewer, framed by wavy hair underneath a hood. Figurines like this one have been found in great quantities in cemeteries, and some researchers think that they were meant to represent or act as substitutes for the people the deceased knew in life. These figurines are a marked contrast to the more religious themes of the Classical and Archaic periods that preceded them, and seem to represent an interesting shift in ancient Greek thoughts about art and death. Size: 2.75" W x 10.4" H (7 cm x 26.4 cm)
