Description
Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 360 to 325 BCE. A lovely wheel-thrown ceramic plate painted in the classic Apulian style. The body of the plate is perfectly round, with a slightly raised rim and a somewhat concave interior, and stands on a small, circular foot. The underside is buff on the inside of the foot and black everywhere else, with the black gaining an iridescent patina over the centuries. The interior is brightly painted, with a decorated rim, and a "lady of fashion" motif in the tondo. She is shown as a woman's head facing left, wearing a kekryphalos hair cover, earrings, and a beaded or pearl necklace. Surrounding her are motif of undulating waves and ivy leaves, and in Apulian style, the paint is red, white, and black. The "lady of fashion" motif is thought to represent a young woman on her wedding day. Size: 5.75" W x 1.375" H (14.6 cm x 3.5 cm).
