Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $300**

Ancient Greece, Late Archaic to Classical, ca. 500 to 450 BCE. An attractive form with a bulbous body, flared neck, and wide mouth - all on a short raised foot, this piece provides a rare glimpse onto the appearance of bronze from classical antiquity. Note the fine quality of the chasing on the neck, shoulder, and interior rim of the mouth - with lovely repeated circular motifs and elegant linear bands. Size: 3.625" in diameter x 2.375" H (9.2 cm x 6 cm)

The ancient Greeks made vessels out of terracotta, stone, glass, ivory, wood, leather, silver, gold, and bronze. While vases comprised of precious metals have for the most part disappeared because they were melted down, ancient literature and recorded inscriptions attest to their existence. Bronze vessels, being less expensive than gold or silver, were created in greater quantities; however, many of them have not survived either. Those that have, like this example, were probably hidden in hoards beneath the ground or buried in tombs.
