Description
1694 1st ed Neoclassical Art HUGE FOLIO Franciscus Junius Pictura Veterum Commentary
Franciscus Junius was a 17th-century philologist known for his radical views which helped establish the neoclassical movement in art. These ideas were collected and published under the title ‘De Pictura Veterum’, a large work divided into several sections of classical texts on the arts which included Junius’s own commentary. It also features biographical sketches of important artists of antiquity along portfolio lists of their works.
This work often became the focal point of argument and discussion on the arts, whether they be written or visual, the value of human life, and the supremacy of the types of arts. Without a doubt this work is considered “one of the cornerstones of Neoclassical movement”.
