Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $100**

Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr. (American), "Map of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Part of Montana." ca. 1860. A fabulous example of S. A. Mitchell Junior's 1866 map of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. The map is engraved and hand-colored with counties and territories color coded. Fascinating details include identification of the proposed Stevens route for the Northern Pacific Railroad as well as the Emigrant Road. In addition, gold mines are noted near Hells Gate Montana, north of Boise Idaho, and along the Idaho-Montana border. The map includes Native American tribes, various geographic features such as notable peaks, as well as towns, counties, rivers, bodies of water, etc. A very collectible map detailing this transitional region in the mid 19th century. Surrounded by an attractive floral border featured in Mitchell atlases between 1860 and 1866. Size: 15.125" W x 12.375" H (38.4 cm x 31.4 cm)

Prepared by W. H. Gamble for inclusion as plate 44 in the 1866 issue of Mitchell's New General Atlas. Like many American map publishers of this period, though he did update his maps, Mitchell did not update his copyrights, consequently this map is dated and copyrighted to 1860: "Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1860 by S. Augustus Mitchell Jr. in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the U.S. for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania." In right margin: "50."

Dissatisfied with what school maps were available, Samuel Augustus Mitchell (1792-1868) became a mapmaker in the 1830s. In time he created a map publishing business that would make him and later his son among the most prominent American map publishers of the 19th century. Mitchell collaborated with prominent mapmakers and expert engravers of the day, including James H. Young and Henry S. Tanner. In this way, Mitchell ensured that his maps were of the utmost quality. During the 1850s, Mitchell partnered with Thomas, Cowperthwait, & Company to publish his "A New Universal Atlas and his General Atlas". In 1860, his son Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr. inherited the Mitchell Company from his father. Among the pioneers of engraving on steel plates, the company specialized in school atlases and wall maps of America for more than thirty years.
