Description
**First Time At Auction**
Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery lid for a lekanis with a wide, ringed base, a sloping top, a slender handle neck, and a discoid handle. Two "lady of fashion" faces in profile adorn the lid top with kekryphalos hairstyles, dangling earrings, and beaded necklaces, with large, stylized palmettes in-between. A decorative register of undulating wave-form motifs decorates the lower rim, and the recessed handle top is embellished with a radiating spoke-form design. Faint silvery iridescence covers most of the black-glazed surfaces. Size: 3.875" W x 2.25" H (9.8 cm x 5.7 cm).

Condition
Surface wear and minor abrasions commensurate with age, very minor nicks to bottom rim and handle, with light fading to pigmentation, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen and mineral deposits throughout. Old inventory number written in black ink underneath.
