Description
Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulian, ca. 4th century BCE. A large and finely painted terracotta mug with a flaring mouth and a single bifurcated strap handle, depicting a Lady of Fashion delineated in red figure technique with white fugitive pigment details. The Lady is presented in profile wearing a beaded saccos with a radiate stephane and drop pendant earrings. Her head is surrounded by sprays of flowers, and beneath the conjoined handle which separates slightly at the rim is a large palmette with side scrolls and smaller palmettes. Adding to the decorative program is a band of foliage adorning the neck and a narrow wave pattern just above the pedestal foot. A beautiful example. Size: 6.25" W x 6.375" H (15.9 cm x 16.2 cm)
