Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. One of the earliest types of stirrup vessels from the "Classic Chavin" period, composed of monochrome greyware, its form comprised of a round, corsetted body adorned by an incised step motif around the shoulder, a large spout, and a modeled cactus opposite the spout to which it is joined by a thick, curved strap handle. The cactus most likely represents the San Pedro cactus, whose branches contain a hallucinogenic substance that was used for traditional medicine and rituals. Size: 7" in diameter x 6.875" H (17.8 cm x 17.5 cm)

Provenance: private Madrone collection, Hawaii, USA
