East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 1644 to 1912 CE. A wooden foo dog, elaborately carved from dark wood, with flourishes at the tail, on top of the head and nose, finely delineated teeth, and a long, sweeping, wing-like motif in low relief on either side of his body. He stands on short, thick feet, and has his face raised to regard the viewer. The "foo dog" is a western name for the Chinese "shi shi", the guardian lion, who since the Han Dynasty has stood in statue form protecting Imperial palaces, tombs, temples, and government offices. Size: 20" L x 5" W x 12.8" H (50.8 cm x 12.7 cm x 32.5 cm)
