Description
**First Time At Auction**
Southeast Asia, Thailand, Rattanakosin period, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A fine example of a hollow, cast gilded bronze depiction of the Buddha, seated on a pedestal with his legs crossed and his hands in his lap in the Dhyana Mudra used for meditation and deep concentration. His ears are long, emphasizing his wealth in his previous life - they have been stretched from wearing large earrings. However, here he is shown after his enlightenment, as evidenced by his large ushnisha, the pointed projection from the top of his head that symbolizes his newfound knowledge. This sculpture is a quintessential example of the Rattanakosin style with its flame-like motif emerging from the ushnisha. Size: 4.2" W x 5.55" H (10.7 cm x 14.1 cm)
Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
