Description
Late 19th c. Russian Carved Tiger Eye Horse Head Sculpture, presented in an Imperial Academy of Arts (St. Petersburg) fitted box, unsigned, sculpture: 5 1/4" high, 6" x 1 5/8", box: 11 1/4" x 7 3/4" x 2 5/8". Good condition, surface wear to box.
The Imperial Academy was founded in 1757, and training there was a critical step for aspiring artists. Abolished in 1918 after the Russian Revolution, it was later re-established and re-named several times. Today, it is known as the Russian Academy of Arts and is located in Moscow.
