Item Details
Description
An original unopened package of six bottles, inside, each individual bottle is fully wrapped in it’s own paper label, inside of this the bottle is wrapped in a four page advertising circular entitled Wheatley’s Journal Of Health. The bottles are pontiled, unembossed, cylindrical in form and finished with an applied rolled lip. The whole package is wrapped in a brown paper, tied with a string and the full face covered with a large pale green label. The label reads WHEATLEY’S SPANISH PAIN DESTROYER with detailed and exaggerated claims as to it’s contents and it’s ability to cure. One claim of many being the inclusion of various vegetations imported from Spain and Turkey. The claims to cure virtually everything under the sun for both man and beast, including Sweeny Ring Bone, are nothing but inspiring! The label continues to insinuate credibility by proclaiming the medecine is PREPARED ONLY BY DR. J. B. WHEATLEY,/DALLASBURGH, KENTUCKY". AND WITHOUT WHOSE SIGNATURE, NONE CAN BE GENUINE. This is supported by a large facsimile signature. And lastly for all this, that guarantees to cure all that ails you, the price was a mere fifty cents per bottle. It is likely these packages would have been sold wholesale to a druggist for retail distribution. The lot includes an individual bottle package opened to reveal the wrapping and the advertisng circular. The Corning Museum of Glass has an example in their collection. Package: 5 in. x 5 in. x 3 in. deep / Bottle: 4.5 in. tall x 3.5 in. / Bottle wrapper (flat) 6.75 in. x 5.75 in. / Advertising Circular 10 in. x 13.5 in.

  • Condition
Condition: exceptional, label is complete with only small areas of staining. One has to assume the bottles are full with contents. The brown wrapping is complete and tight, again only with a small amount of staining at the back of the package. The string that binds the package is intact. The bottle wrapper has a small tear at the outside edge of display area. The advertising circular is complete and free from tears with subtle staining that does not detract from display. The bottle included is in mint condition with partial contents.
