Description
Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 4th century to 1st century BCE. A rare mold-made ceramic Greek depiction of a Nubian, depicted with lifelike features and hair. The figure wears a conical hat that resembles the Phrygian cap. During the Hellenistic period, the Greeks often portrayed non-Greek people as wearing hats of this style. The Hellenistic Greeks had extensive contacts with Africa, and specifically the Nubians, who lived south of Pharaonic Egypt; one reason for this was that, after encountering elephants as war vehicles during Alexander's time in India, they sought an African source for the animals. Size: 1.5" W x 2.45" H (3.8 cm x 6.2 cm); 3.5" H (8.9 cm) on included custom stand.
