Kline, mostly remembered for his bold compositions in black and white, went on to produce color abstractions. This painting, believed to be a transitional piece, has strong black lines, an armature to the energetic strokes of amber and brown.

Private collections, Massachusetts and California, reported obtained from Samuel Kootz of the Kootz Gallery New York circa 1970.

Very good condition: Canvas has been relined; multiple-spots inpainted; new stretcher and frame.
