Description
3rd century AD. A bronze P-shaped bow brooch with three waisted knops to the head, deep bow, tapering foot with return to the reverse and narrowed end wound about the shank, spring with extended chord inside the bow. Cf. Hattatt, R. Brooches of Antiquity, Oxford, 1987, item 1243 for type. 9.15 grams, 50mm (2"). From a private collection; previously in an old central Asian collection; acquired in the late 1940s. The brooch differs from the standard P-shaped bow brooch by including a third knop at the centre of the cross-bar - a feature which was developed in the popular 'crossbow' type brooches. [No Reserve]
