Description
**First Time At Auction**
Northern Europe, Viking/Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A cast bronze brooch (fibula), penannular in form, with particularly long, projecting terminals that give it a sleek, elegant shape. A thin, flat pin is wrapped around the curved body of the brooch to fasten the item to clothing. The penannular style of brooch was originally created in the Celtic British Isles ca. 600 CE and became popular throughout Scandinavia after the Vikings began to have contact with Celtic peoples following their roads along the coasts at the end of the 8th century CE. Its owner would have pushed the long pin through the folds of their wool cloak and then pushed one end of the ring under the sharp end of the pin. The ring was then rotated to hold the pin in place. Size: 4.25" L x 2.625" W (10.8 cm x 6.7 cm)
Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
