Description
**First Time At Auction**
Egypt, Ptolemaic period, ca. 332 to 30 BCE; Near East, Islamic, ca. 7th to 12th century CE. A pair of terracotta oil lamps from two distinctive ancient cultures. First is an Egyptian mold-made 'frog-form' oil lamp with a slight rounded base, ovoid body composition, a nubbin-shaped wick spout, and a small fill hole. The area above the fill hole has a small stylized face, shaped like an abstract frog; frogs are highly symbolic, representing the process of resurrection and reanimation in ancient Egyptian mythos. Second is a hand-built Islamic lamp with an open-face design, slight concave base, single applied loop handle, and a pinched wick rest. The majority of visible surfaces are enveloped in an emerald-green glaze. Each lamp is skillfully-designed, and both are wonderful representative examples of their respective cultures! Size of largest (both fairly similar in size): 3.25" L (8.3 cm).
Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
