Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi culture, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE. A wonderful ensemble of thirty hand-built pottery spindle whorls, arranged between two strands of leather cord, and suspended with dark-brown macrame thread to form a stylish double-wrap bracelet. Common to each bead is the abstract pelican theme, a motif often used in Manabi art. The pelican is a highly-symbolic avian figure, believed to be capable of traversing the many realms of existence including the cloudy heavens, the rugged earth, and the watery depths of the underworld. A large black button is knotted to one end while the other has a suspension loop fashioned from the lengthy cord ends. A striking and wearable accessory meant to accentuate any ensemble! Size (bracelet): 18" L (45.7 cm); size (largest bead): 0.375" H (1 cm); total weight: 60.4 grams.

Strung in modern times and wearable as shown. Spindle whorls have age-commensurate surface wear, light fading to incised designs and coloration, and minor nicks along perforation rims, otherwise intact and excellent.
