Description
**First Time At Auction**
Western Asia, Dagestan Region, located on the northwestern shores of the Caspian Sea, ca. 1500 to 500 BCE. A cast bronze idol in the form of a standing anthropomorphic figure with exaggerated features, notably huge hands raised with the wide palms turned outward to face the viewer. The rest of the body has very little form aside from large eyes and a curvy torso and hips. This particular style of idol comes from the Caucasus, a little-studied region, with most academic studies done in Russian. These small bronze figures seem to have been part of an incredibly long artistic tradition; they look similar to clay ones created during the Neolithic period. At this same time, burials contain a tremendous amount of weapons, and we believe that gods related to military prowess. Interestingly, Russian archaeologists have found some examples of these small idols buried with remains of clothing on them - perhaps why their bodies are so undecorated. Size: 1.2" W x 2.1" H (3 cm x 5.3 cm)
Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
