Description
**Originally Listed At $350**
Western Asia, Dagestan Region, located on the northwestern shores of the Caspian Sea, ca. 1500 to 500 BCE. A bronze idol, anthropomorphic in form, made to show a human with oversized hands that are raised to the sides of the head and touch the ears. The hands are turned outward to face the viewer, with giant palms and fingers. Otherwise the figure is simple, with a large head, foreshortened torso, and long legs. This particular style of idol comes from the Caucasus, a little-studied region, with most academic studies done in Russian. These small bronze figures seem to have been part of an incredibly long artistic tradition; they look similar to clay ones created during the Neolithic period. At this same time, burials contain a tremendous amount of weapons, and we believe that gods related to military prowess. Interestingly, Russian archaeologists have found some examples of these small idols buried with remains of clothing on them - perhaps why their bodies are so undecorated. Size: 1.25" W x 2" H (3.2 cm x 5.1 cm)
Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
