This Antique Northwood Amethyst Grape and Cable Footed Orange or Fruit Bowl is a very striking impressive piece of vintage iridescent carnival glass. It was produced by Northwood in the 1910s (Pieces made between 1905 and about 1915 may have an underlined N trade mark).The color is Amethyst and the condition is EXCELLENT! The color has electric iridescence that is even all over. The inside color is good and dark with blue and purple highlights that is very even. It measures 10 ½” x 6 ¾” inches. Northwood Grape & Cable Fruit bowls came in three sizes (in depth and circumference), all having the three curled feet. This one has the plain interior and the Cable inter-twined with the grapes. All in this pattern have in-out deeply fluted top edges. This is a fairly hard piece to find especially in this condition. This is a MAGNIFICENT PIECE! A little history: Northwood glass was made by the H. Northwood Co., founded in Wheeling, West Virginia, in 1901 by Harry Northwood. He worked for the Hobbs-Brockunier and LaBelle firms in the 1880s before operating his own glass plants in Martins Ferry, Ohio, and Ellwood City and Indiana, Pennsylvania. At the Wheeling factory, Harry Northwood and his brother Carl manufactured pressed and blown tableware and novelties in many colors that are collected today as custard, opalescent, goofus, carnival, and stretch glass.. In 1908, Northwood began producing carnival glass with a pattern of grapes, one of its earliest patterns. It was one of Northwood’s most popular patterns is Grape and Cable. It was in such high demand, many mold variations were made, and it can be found in plain or stippled. The standard design for plates and bowls has four smaller leaves around a circle center, surrounded by four larger leaves and four grape clusters. Northwood succeeded because it was innovative, experimenting with splatter patterns and previously unseen colors. While all pieces of carnival glass appear to contain multiple colors, iridized glass tends to be identified by the base color of the glass that's treated. Northwood invented many signature colors for its iridized glass, including amethyst, cobalt blue, and green, as well as in pastels, ice blue and ice green, and white. Harry Northwood died in 1919, and the plant closed in 1925.
